
RUTH G. FERRIS, 95, of Indianapolis, passed away June 4, 2016, at Marquette Manor. She was born May 20, 1921, in Detroit, Michigan, to Elray and Florence Schuman. She was a standout athlete in high school in basketball and softball. She graduated from Wayne State University with a Bachelor of Science degree. She married Ralph W. Ferris in June, 1942, and taught school in Dearborn, Michigan. She moved to Indianapolis in 1957 with her husband and two daughters and attended Butler University, receiving a Master’s Degree in Science. She taught elementary school at IPS School 91 and physics and chemistry at Northview Middle School in Washington Township. She was an impactful teacher. Many of her “X-level” students went on to successful careers in medicine, science and other professions. Ruth led a rich, full life and traveled the world with her husband after their retirement.
She was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, American Association of University Women,Indiana Retired Teachers Association and AARP. Ruth is survived by her daughter Julie Meadows (Morris) of Waterford, Michigan, grandson Robert Cotner (Sherri) and great grandson Ryan Cotner of Terre Haute and special friend Dean Knapp. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, husband Ralph W. Ferris and daughter Kathleen Ferris. Inurnment will be at Oaklawn Cemetery followed by a private graveside memorial service at a later date. Arrangements by Indiana Funeral Care
